The method involves arranging a scale (14) on the lateral surface of two impression cylinders (04,05,06,07) of a printing element (02,03) of a rotary printing press. Measuring techniques are detected by path signals by scanning of the scale during operation. Difference formation of the path signals is correlated. Kinematic operating errors of the rotary printing press is determined by calculating the individual diameter of the impression cylinders.
