Provided is a display device (4) comprising a pair of first and second polarizing plates (15 and 11) having polarizing transparent axes orthogonal to each other, a main liquid crystal display unit (14) and a switching liquid crystal display unit (12) arranged between the first and second polarizing plates (15 and 11). The switching liquid crystal display unit (12) controls the angle of view of the main liquid crystal display unit (14). This main liquid crystal display unit (14) includes a vertically oriented liquid crystal layer (43) for displaying an object image when a drive voltage according to the image is applied to the liquid crystal layer (43). On the other hand, the switching liquid crystal display unit (12) has a liquid crystal layer (23) interposed between a pair of substrates (21 and 22), and controls the voltage to be applied to the liquid crystal layer (23). The voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer (23) is controlled to change the orientation direction of the liquid crystal layer (23), thereby to change the optical compensation effect of the liquid crystal layer (23) upon the birefringence of the liquid crystal layer (43) in the oblique direction.
