An automotive piston engine has a valve (1) with a spring (3) operated actuator (2) without a camshaft. In the low-speed regime the pressure chamber (4) is open to the atmosphere, but above this engine speed the chamber is open to a source of pneumatic pressure (5) The valve pressure chamber volume is adjustable. The spring force is thus individually adjustable.
