PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition capable of giving a pneumatic tire maintaining its abrasion resistance and excellent in low rolling resistance, and to provide such a pneumatic tire having the performances, wherein the rubber composition is used in the tread. SOLUTION: The rubber composition is such as to be prepared by compounding 100 pts.mass of a rubber component including a diene rubber with 10-100 pts.mass of carbon black meeting the relationship (I): Rm>-0.125×X+40 [wherein, Rm is the half-width of the primary particle size distribution of the carbon black determined by the small-angle X-ray scattering technique; and X is cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) adsorption specific surface area (m<SP>2</SP>/g)].
