Disclosed are compositions and methods related to oil producing microbes that can produce unsaturated fatty acids which can be purified and used. Als o disclosed are methods to modify said fatty acid concentrations within tota l lipid compositions using fatty acid production antagonists which either in hibit or stimulate certain components of the classical fatty acid production pathway thought to exist within oil producing microbes.
