979,382. Ketones. SOCONY MOBIL OIL CO. Inc. Jan. 4, 1961 [Jan. 15, 1960], No. 39259/64. Divided out of 979,381. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Ketones are prepared by contacting an olefin having the general formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are alkyl radicals containing 1-18 carbon atoms or aryl radicals containing 6-20 carbon atoms and X and Y are hydrogen, R or R<SP>1</SP> as defined above, with a crystalline alkali or alkaline earth metal aluminosilicate catalyst having rigid three-dimensional networks and uniform effective pore diameter sufficiently large to permit entry therein of said olefin, in the presence of the air initially adsorbed in the pores thereof, and removing a ketone product from the catalyst, no air being supplied to the catalyst during the reaction. Preferably, an excess of olefin is used and the ketone product is removed from the catalyst by steaming. In a modification, the olefin is contacted continuously with steam and air in the presence of the catalyst under conditions such that the mol. ratio of olefin to steam to air is within the approximate range of 1:0-1:0À1 to 1:5:10. The catalyst preferably has a uniform effective pore diameter in the range of about 7-13 Angstrom units. The catalyst may have a transition metal or a rare earth element or compounds thereof within the pores of the structure. Several suitable olefin starting materials are specified. Examples describe the oxidation of α-methylstyrene to acetophenone and of 2-ethylhexene-1 to a mixture of ketones. Specifications 777,232 and 777,233 also are referred to. |
