PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove a free fatty acid in a raw material oil to increase the yield of a fatty acid alkyl ester, in the method for producing the fatty acid alkyl ester by a transesterification reaction of the raw material oil in the presence of a lower alkyl alcohol and an alkali catalyst. SOLUTION: The fatty acid alkyl ester and, in its turn, a bio-diesel fuel, are produced in a good yield by adding an acid and an alkyl alcohol to the raw material oil, extracting free fatty acids into an alkyl alcohol layer to remove it and subsequently subjecting an oily layer formed by the addition to an esterification reaction. Examples of the acid include an inorganic acid such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, formic acid, phosphoric acid and the like can be exemplified. Examples of the alcohol include a 1-6C alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, pentanol, hexanol and the like can be exemplified. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
