Method for the electrically controlled assistance of the movement of a motor vehicle (1) comprises using an estimated total friction value which is a measure for the contact of the vehicle with the ground (8). A front transverse force acting on the tires (4) of the front wheels (2) and a rear transverse force acting on the tires (5) of the rear wheels (3) are estimated to estimate the total friction value. Preferred Features: A front friction value depending on the estimated front transverse force and the rear friction value depending on the estimated rear transverse force are determined.
