PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively reduce a frame region in a backlight equipped with a hot cathode fluorescent lamp. SOLUTION: The backlight 100 equipped with the hot cathode fluorescent lamp 10 comprises: the hot cathode fluorescent lamp 10 having a bulb 12; a base 50 provided at the end part of the hot cathode fluorescent lamp 10; a socket 40 connected to an external terminal 52 of the base 50; and a lamp holder 75 for holding the hot cathode fluorescent lamp 10. In the backlight 100, the external terminal 52 of the base 50 extends in the direction approximately perpendicular to the longitudinal direction 92 of the bulb 12 (for example, the direction reverse to a screen direction 90) while the lamp holder 75 comprises an elastic member 77 so that the hot cathode fluorescent lamp 10 can be moved along the longitudinal direction 92 of the bulb 12.
