The transmission (14) has six torque transmitting devices (50,52,54,55,56,57) for selectively interconnecting mechanisms of the planetary gear sets (20,30,40) with a stationary mechanism or with other mechanisms of the planetary gear sets. The torque transmitting devices are engaged in combinations of three to establish eight forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio between the input mechanism (17) and output mechanism (19).
