PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pickling method for a stainless steel stock free from the need of both hot rolled sheet annealing and pickling pretreatment and a method for producing the stainless steel stock. SOLUTION: When a stainless steel stock is pickled with a pickling liquid, the pickling liquid is a mixed solution composed of a hydrochloric acid solution having a concentration of 70 to 200 g/L and a hydrogen peroxide solution having a concentration of 8 to 30 g/L. By performing pickling treatment with the mixed solution, intergranular erosion caused by sensitization in the vicinity of grain boundaries by the precipitation of Cr carbonitrides upon hot rolling is suppressed, and black skin scale can be perfectly removed. As a result, the stainless steel hot rolled sheet after hot rolling can be directly subjected to pickling treatment without performing hot rolled sheet annealing and pickling pretreatment.
