PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gellant having excellent gelling ability with respect to an organic group agent such as an alcohol, and a gel composition containing the same. SOLUTION: The gellant contains a cellulose derivative having a 100,000-1,500,000 mass average molecular weight represented by formula (1), wherein R is a group selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyalkyl group and a substituent represented by general formula (2), Q, E<SP>1</SP>and E<SP>2</SP>are each a specific alkane diyl group, A is an ether bond or an oxycarbonyl group, a is a number from 0 to 10, n is a number from 0 to 20, and the substitution degree of the substituent of formula (2) is 50-200 per 1,000 repeating units of formula (1).
