Plasma arc remelting of semi-product

A semi-product is remelted by plasma-arc in a controlled atmosphere in a cooled esp., Cu ingot mould. The semi-product is made with a longitudinal hollow through which plasmagenic gas e.g., Ar and/or N2 is passed when the semi-product is placed inside the ingot mould and a current passed between it and a molten metal bath at the base of the mould. The functional zone of the plasma is displaced upwardly as the semi-product is melted.
