The invention provides a method for determining the satiety status of a mammalian subject comprising the step of determining in a sample of saliva from the subject the level of one or more biomarkers. The invention also provides biomarkers suitable for use in the method of the invention, in particular gastrointestinal or pancreatic pept ide hormone biomarkers and/or salivary biomarkers that correlate directly with perceived satiety in a mammalian subject. The invention further provides solid carriers comprising one or more antibodies specific for a gastrointestinal and/or a pancreatic peptide hormone and/or salivary pept ides, that are suitable for carrying out the method of the invention.
