Phosphinic acid halides prepn - by reacting phosphinic acid esters with inorg acid halides

Phosphinyl halides of the formula R1R2P(O)X (where R1 and R2 are not >18C alkyl, aryl or aralkyl and X is halogen), which are useful as inters., e.g. for plant-protection agents, are prepd. in good yields and purity by reacting an ester of formula R1R2P(O)-O-R3 with an inorg. acid halide of formula (YO)nX2 (where R3 is 1-18C alkyl, and Y is C and n is 1 or 2 or Y is S and n is 1) to give an anhydride of the formula R1R2P(O)-O-P(O)R1R2 and further reacting this (opt. after isolation) to give the desired phosphinyl halide.
