PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform autofocus (AF) in a short period of time. SOLUTION: In a face detection mode, when a release button is half-depressed, a face detection processing starts. When the face is detected, an approximate distance up to the person's face is calculated based on the calculation result of the size of the facial area. A lens moving distance is determined based on a distance obtained by correcting the calculated approximate distance by an approximate distance calculation error. An AF search to obtain an AF contrast value for every prescribed feed amount of the lens is performed while moving a focus lens from an infinite end (INF) side toward the closest photographing distance (MOD) by the decided lens moving distance, then, the peak position of the AF contrast value on the side closest to the MOD side is determined as a focal position, then, the focus lens is moved to the focal position. By starting the AF search from the INF side having the large fluctuation in a focal position, the range of the AF search is shortened. Consequently, the AF is performed in a short period of time.
