PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphinic acid compound useful as one of various flame retardants. SOLUTION: The phosphinic acid compound is an asymmetrically substituted bis(1-hydroxymethyl)phosphinic acid salt represented by formula (I): A-P(=O)(OX)-B [wherein, A is R<SB>1</SB>R<SB>2</SB>C(OH)-; B is R<SB>3</SB>R<SB>4</SB>C(OH)-, wherein these R<SB>1</SB>R<SB>2</SB>C(OH)- and R<SB>3</SB>R<SB>4</SB>C(OH)- groups are always different respectively, and R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>4</SB>are each H, an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl, aryl and/or substituted aryl; X is a first main group element, second main group or subgroup element, third main group or subgroup element, fourth main group or subgroup element, eighth subgroup element and/or nitrogen base].
