The method involves detecting damages e.g. hail damages, by scanning a surface of a motor vehicle (6), while three scanning devices i.e. laser scanner (1), are automatically moved relative to the surface of the vehicle. The relative movement between the vehicle and the scanning devices takes place in a direction of a longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Data for depth and diameter of the detected damages are processed by an image processing system for categorizing and checking of the damages. The scanner is arranged at a holder, which is movable relative to the vehicle by a mechanical drive. An independent claim is also included for a device for execution of a method of detecting and examining of damages e.g. hail damages of a body of a motor vehicle.
