1349741 Polishing compositions UNILEVER Ltd 4 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 21926/70 Heading C5W [Also in Division C3] An aqueous cleaning and polishing composition, in particular for floors, comprises (a) an oxidized montan wax of acid value at least 75; (b) an at least partially alkali-soluble filmforming resin or polymer; (c) a surfactant; (d) a volatile alkaline compound; and (e) water, the amount of (a) and (b) being 15-90% and 85-15% respectively of the total weight (a) + (b), constituent (b) having an alkali-soluble content which is at least 10% by wt. of (a) + (b), and the composition having a pH of at least 10À2. Suitable alkali soluble resins include shellac, rosin-maleic acid adducts, polyesters of rosin with ethylene or propylene glycol, styreneacrylic and styrene-maleic copolymers, and thermoplastic polyesters, particularly in the form of aqueous solutions of their ammonium salts. Aqueous dispersions of alkali-insoluble copolymers may also be present, e.g. acrylate and styrene homo- and co-polymers or metal cross-linked polyligand copolymers based on acrylates or styrene. Such polymers but of higher acid value, e.g. acrylic-itaconic acid copolymers, are suitable alkali-soluble components. The volatile alkaline compound (d) may be ammonia, or an alkylamine or alkanolamine. Optional ingredients are (f) a plasticizer, which may be (i) permanent or (ii) fugitive, e.g. (i) dibutyl phthalate, tributyl phosphate or tributoxy ethyl phosphate, or (ii) a glycol or glycol ether; (g) a levelling agent, e.g. a fluoroalkyl surfactant; (h) a preservative, e.g. formaldehyde; (i) a stabilizer; (j) perfume. The total film-forming ingredients or "polish solids" amount to 5-15% by wt. of the composition. In Examples 1-7 an aqueous emulsion of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer is used as alkali soluble resin. Example 3 also contains a polystyrene emulsion, Example 4 a styrene-acrylate copolymer emulsion, and Examples 5-7 both a styrene-acrylate copolymer and an acrylate-itaconate copolymer emulsion. |
