The cutting device shortens belts on a mounting machine. It has a housing (13), with a belt channel (14) formed in it, a cutter cutting the belt across the conveying direction, and a belt holding device (31) containing first and second clamping elements (36, 37) to clamp the belt. The belt holding device enables the belt to be fixed relative to the housing between the clamping elements.
