The invention provides a stand mixer 10 having a head part 50 from which a working tool depends towards a pedestal 40 upon which a bowl can be placed so that the working tool can be employed to mix ingredients in the bowl; the tool being driven by means of an electric motor and gearing to perform a planetary mixing action within the bowl. The head part is pivotable away from the pedestal, in order to permit the tool to be moved into and out of the bowl; this pivotal movement of the head part being initiated by user-operation of a mechanical latch, and assisted by the influence of a strong spring 80. In order to prevent the head part from moving upwards rapidly and being stopped abruptly when it reaches the end of its travel, the invention further provides a damper 90 configured to restrict the rate of movement of the head part. By this means, the aforementioned abrupt stopping of the head part is countered, since the damper opposes the powerful resilient urge provided by the spring. |
