An image capturing device, an image capturing method, an exposure control method and a program are provided to control exposure with regard to a short term exposure image signal to eliminate over exposure in parts except a main subject in a setting exposure mode, thereby improving image quality. In a setting exposure mode, a user sets proper exposure with regard to a main subject by an operation unit(ST1,ST2). A timing generator sets speed of two different electronic shutters, and performs long term exposure and short term exposure in an image capturing element(ST3). An image processor mixes a long term exposure image signal and a short term exposure image signal and generates the mixed image signal having a wider dynamic range(ST4). The mixed image signal is supplied to a detection unit. The detection unit generates a luminance histogram of the mixed image signal, and transmits the luminance histogram to a controller per a field(ST5). The controller obtains the luminance histogram from the detection unit, detects over exposure in the mixed image signal from the luminance histogram, and determines a short term exposure time to eliminate over exposure of the mixed image signal(ST6). The controller automatically controls exposure by using the short term exposure time(ST7). |
