An apparatus and a method for removing a direct current component of a fault current are provided to remove the DC component of the fault current by calculating an amplitude and a time constant of the fault current with the DC component from sample data of a line current. A device(1) for detecting sample data of a line current detects the sample data of the line current. A fault current calculator(2) is connected to the device for detecting the sample data of the line current, calculates an amplitude and a time constant of the fault current with the DC component from the sample data of the line current, and removes the fault current with the DC component from the line current by removing the current part of the calculated amplitude and the time constant from the line current.
