1379350 Depolarizer mix for primary cell RHEINISCH-WESTFALISCHES ELEKTRIZITATSWERK AG 22 June 1973 [29 July 1972] 29897/73 Heading H1B Expanded graphite is incorporated in the positive active mix of a primary cell up to an amount by weight of 25% of the positive active material. Expanded graphite has a somewhat coral-like texture and has a structure entirely different from graphite in sphere, flake or grain form. The active material may be MnO 2 or PhO or a combination of these compounds. The expanded graphite may be incorporated with the active material by mechanical mixing of powders or the active material may be deposited on the expanded graphite by chemical, electrochemical or physical deposition. In one example expanded graphite is added to a solution of manganese nitrate to form crystals which are disintegrated by heating at 300‹ C. resulting in finely distributed MnO 2 on the surface of the expanded graphite. This positive active mix is pressed around a graphite pin constituting the positive electrode of the cell. The anode compprises zinc and the electrolyte is H 2 SO 4 . Alternatively, the electrolyte may be NB 4 Cl or phosphoric acid. Alternative current conductors for the positive electrode are Cu, Ni, Pb, leadcovered steel or Ti. These conductors may be in the form of sheet, foil, mesh or fibre fielt. |
