Substituted imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines and their use as agonists at GABAA receptors for treating or preventing neurological or psychiatric disorders wherein a is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4; R<1> is selected from an optionally substituted C6-10 aryl group, an optionally substituted 5-membered unsaturated heterocycle; R<2> is H or C1-6 alkyl; R<3> is C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkenyl, C1-6 alkynyl, an optionally substituted C1-6 alkoxy, or a ring system; R<4> is H or a substituent; X is a direct bond, C=O or SO2. Preferred compounds include those where X is C=O and R<1> is thiophenyl. The compounds of formula (I) act as agonists at GABAA receptors and are thus useful for treating or preventing neurological or psychiatric disorders.
