A method for preparing 1,2-ditolyloxyethane is provided to improve production yield even if the amount of m-cresol is reduced, thereby enhancing economical efficiency. A method for preparing 1,2-ditolyloxyethane comprises the step of reacting 1,2-dichloroethane and m-cresol under the base condition by adding a phase transition catalyst and potassium iodide to prepare the 1,2-ditolyloxyethane represented by the formula 1. Preferably the content of the phase transition catalyst is 0.01-1 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of m-cresol and is at least one selected from the group consisting of polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol and polyoxyethylene alkyl ether; and the content of potassium iodide is 0.01-1 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of m-cresol.
