An apparatus and a method for decoding are provided to reproduce a multi-channel signal in various reproduction environments, by efficiently processing a signal having 3D effect. A compatible type down-mix signal optimized to a first multi-channel decoder(910) is extracted from a bit stream. A compatible process is performed by converting the compatible type down-mix signal into a down-mix signal optimized to a second multi-channel decoder(930). A 3D rendering process is performed on the converted down-mix signal, thereby generating a 3D down-mix signal. An HRTF(Head Related Transfer Function) is used in the 3D rendering process. For performing the compatible process, firstly, the compatible type down-mix signal is domain-converted from a first domain to a second domain. The compatible type down-mix signal is converted into the down-mix signal optimized to the second multi-channel decoder on the second domain. The converted down-mix signal is domain-converted from the second domain to the first domain.
