The simulator (1) includes a smouldering fire structure (2) comprising an arrangement of round or rectilinear structures (6) covered with heat resistant metal gauze, which are heated from the inside so that they glow red hot. A fireplace (13) is located beneath these structures and an extinguisher detection system (12) is also provided in the simulator. The fireplace and burners (3) for the smouldering fire can be controlled independently.
