<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the sliding characteristics of a sintered metal sliding member impregnated with a lubricating oil, particularly those during the initial sliding. <P>SOLUTION: A bearing surface 4 in slidable contact with the outer peripheral surface of a shaft 2 to be supported is formed on the inner periphery of the sintered oil retaining bearing 1. A large number of surface opening holes 5 are present in the bearing surface 4, and a large number of dimples 6 are formed in the bearing surface.
