PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and smoothly switch video without any sense of incongruity. SOLUTION: When a video signal is switched from a first video signal to a second video signal and output, an average luminance level is discriminated in a step ST42, and a signal level of a video signal for synthesis is set in a step ST43 according to the discriminated average luminance level. In a step ST44, the first video signal is switched to the video signal for synthesis and mute operation is started. In a step ST45, the video signal is switched from the first video signal to the second video signal and the mute operation is ended in a step ST46. The switching from the first video signal to the second video signal is performed during mute display based upon the video signal for synthesis having a signal level corresponding to the average luminance level of the first video signal, so video can easily and smoothly be switched without any sense of incongruity.
