PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink cartridge determination device and an ink cartridge determination method, which enable the reliable and precise determination of the type of an ink cartridge. SOLUTION: A main control section 200 determines the type of the ink cartridge based on output signals of sensors 230 and 235. Firstly, it is determined whether or not the signal level of the optical sensor 230 has been changed from HIGH to LOW (S1). When the signal level of the optical sensor 230 has been changed to LOW, it is determined whether or not the signal level of the optical sensor 235 has been changed from HIGH to LOW. When the signal level of the optical sensor 230 at the time when the signal level of the optical sensor 235 is changed to LOW is HIGH, an ink cartridge 10a is determined.
