PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide transmissive and reflective liquid crystal display elements which can be miniaturized and can be manufactured at lower manufacturing costs than conventional elements and are superior in moisture resistance. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal element includes: a first substrate 10 having a pixel region formed with a plurality of pixel electrodes 12; a second substrate 20 which is disposed to face the first substrate with a prescribed gap D1 between them and is provided with a light-transmissive electrode 22 in a region facing the pixel region; a seal part 31 which is provided along a peripheral part of the pixel region so as to surround the pixel region and joins the first substrate and the second substrate with a prescribed gap between these substrates; liquid crystal 33 filled in the prescribed gap in a region surrounded with the seal part; and a moisture-resistant layer 32 containing silicon dioxide (SiO<SB>2</SB>) and provided along a peripheral part of the seal part so as to cover an outer circumferential surface of the seal part over the first substrate and the second substrate.
