PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of a possibility of torque fluctuation or breakage of an engine itself, since involuntary ignition occurs before premixed compression ignition when performing the premixed compression ignition if voltage applied to an ignition plug for detection is adjusted according to a generation state of an ion current to be detected, when the ion current for determining a combustion state is detected, in a gasoline engine in which spark ignition or the premixed compression ignition is selectively performed according to an operational area. SOLUTION: In the gasoline engine, an exhaust valve, an intake valve, and an ignition plug is provided, and one of the spark ignition and the premixed compression ignition is performed. In the ion current detection method for the gasoline engine for detecting the ion current generated in combustion when the premixed compression ignition is performed, when the premixed compression ignition is performed, high voltage for generating voltage for ion current detection is applied to the ignition plug before fuel reaches near the ignition plug.
