<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission capable of reducing the full length of multi-disk brakes connected in the axial direction. <P>SOLUTION: The automatic transmission 1 equipped with a first brake pack 38 and a second brake pack 58 connected in series in the direction of spline grooves 83 and 85 comprises a first piston 31 to press the first brake pack 38, a first cylinder 35 containing the first piston 31 to slide in the axial direction, a second piston 51 to press the second brake pack 58, and a second cylinder 55 containing the second piston 51 to slide in the axial direction.
