PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing paper, which has good dimensional stability, causes little lowering of paper formation, has a low density and good filtrability during paper making by increasing yield in comparison with conventional methods in producing paper mainly composed of a fibrous material containing cellulose as a main component. SOLUTION: The fibrous material mainly composed of cellulose having external fibrils having a scaly microfibril aggregate has more rigid fiber in the same degree of water filtration, a lower degree of water retention and a larger specific surface area than those of a fibrous material having filamentous external fibrils. By using the fibrous material, paper and sheets having high filler retention, excellent in surface characteristics with a low density and having good dimensional stability can be produced.
