<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a birefringent film of which an index ellipsoid satisfies the relationship of nx≥nz>ny and which is excellent in thinning and weight saving and can easily be produced in such a way as to satisfy a desired Nz coefficient. <P>SOLUTION: The birefringent film contains a first acenaphtho[1,2-b]quinoxaline derivative showing lyotropic liquid crystallinity and a second acenaphtho[1,2-b]quinoxaline derivative showing lyotropic liquid crystallinity, wherein an index ellipsoid thereof satisfies the relationship of nx≥nz>ny.
