PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of surely discarding read image data of a white original, or the like, that eliminates the need for copying or storage. SOLUTION: An optional area applied to image data read by an image reading part 33 is set, and whether pixels in the set area are effective pixels is determined.
