PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alcohol highly selectively using a phosphine compound that can be easily recovered and reused. SOLUTION: The method for preparing an alcohol represented by formula (III) is characterized by causing a conjugated diene compound to react with water in the presence of a palladium compound, a triphenylphosphine derivative with its three phenyl groups substituted with a 1-4C alkoxy group(s) and a sulfonic acid salt group(s), and an alkaline substance (a quaternary ammonium salt or a quaternary phosphonium salt).
