<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce manufacturing cost and size of an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: When a printing instruction is given, a CPU 13 drives a developing unit by a stepping motor M before executing a printing action and a value of load on the stepping motor M is calculated. Then, the CPU 13 judges whether or not the value of the load is within a prescribed range which is stored beforehand.
