PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide element of a nested waveguide structure in which the element itself has as an operation point shift suppression function without requiring a controller or the like. SOLUTION: The optical waveguide element includes a substrate having an electro-optical effect, an optical waveguide formed on the substrate, and a plurality of modulation electrodes for modulating a light wave guided in the optical waveguide. The optical waveguide is branched into two in the propagation direction of the light wave to constitute two main optical waveguides. Each main optical waveguide is further branched into two in the propagation direction of the light wave to constitute two sub optical waveguides. The two main optical waveguides constitute a main Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide. The two sub optical waveguides are incorporated into the main Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide to constitute a sub Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide. A heat conduction suppression area of the substrate is provided between the two sub Mach-Zehnder optical waveguides disposed opposite to each other, thereby constituting the optical waveguide element.
