PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high purity hydrogen at high efficiency, in which an organic resource such as coal, biomass or food waste is used as a carbon source and hydrogen is produced from the carbon source and water by a water gasification reaction, and to provide a hydrogen production apparatus used for the same. SOLUTION: In the hydrogen production method utilizing the water gasification reaction in which carbon and water are reacted to form hydrogen gas, the reaction is allowed to proceed while selectively separating generated hydrogen by a hydrogen separation membrane and/or a hydrogen occluding alloy to reduce the partial pressure of hydrogen in the reaction system.
