An internal combustion engine is provided with an exhaust gas passage which has an NO_x removal catalyst (14) disposed therein and an intermediate formation catalyst (12) disposed upstream in the passage from the NO_x removal catalyst (14), the catalyst (12) being capable of occluding NO_x contained in the exhaust gas. When a fuel in an atomized state is supplied to the intermediate formation catalyst (12), the NO_x trapped by the intermediate formation catalyst (12) or the NO_x contained in the exhaust gas reacts with the fuel supplied to form an intermediate (33) made up of molecules formed by the bonding of a hydrocarbon to the NO_x, the amount of the hydrocarbon being at least 1 equivalent to the NO_x.
