The method for the optimizing of the running of an Otto internal combustion engine (4) of a motor vehicle entails running the engine either leaner or stoichometrically depending upon driving conditions of the vehicle. Available signals concerning momentary and/or retrospective driving conditions of the vehicle (2) are evaluated in order to meet a prediction about probably immediately imminent driving conditions, and the outcome of this prediction is taken into account when establishing the running mode.
