<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent unevenness in luminance, when a screen is viewed from an oblique direction. <P>SOLUTION: In a backlight of a liquid crystal display device, a light source control part for controlling the backlight turns on only a center LED chip 174 out of a plurality of divided LED chips 174 so as to emit light at a narrower angle, when necessary backlight luminance BL<SB>i, j</SB>is low backlight luminance and turns on all the LED chips 174 so as to emit light at a wider angle, when the necessary backlight luminance BL<SB>i, j</SB>is high backlight luminance.
