A process for producing a porous carbon material from a plant-derived mat erial as a raw material, including carbonizing a plant-derived material at 8 00° to 1400°C and treating the carbonized matter with an acid or alkali. Acc ording to the process, a porous carbon material of 10 m2/gram or more specif ic surface area according to the nitrogen BET method, 1 wt.% or less silicon content and 0.1 cm3/gram or more pore volume can be obtained from a plant-d erived material of 10 wt.% or more silicon content as a raw material. By thi s process, there can be obtained a porous carbon material of excellent funct ionality finding applicability in, for example, a negative electrode materia l of battery, adsorbent, mask, adsorbent sheet and supporting member.
