PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of easily eliminating stains attached and accumulated on a cleaning member. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an original carrying part provided openably and closably to form a carrying path for carrying an original in a closed state; a reading sensor 12 for reading an image of the original carried on the carrying path; a rotation member 25 arranged at a position facing the reading sensor 12 across the carrying path; a driving means 15 for rotatingly driving the rotation member 25; and a cleaning member 16 attached to the rotation member 25 to clean a reading surface of the reading sensor 12. When an opening/closing detecting means 37 for detecting an opened/closed state of the original carrying part detects an opened state of the original carrying part, the driving means 15 is controlled so as to stop the cleaning member 16 with the cleaning member 16 exposed from the original carrying part.
