A vapor condenser, in the form of a tube bundle heat exchanger with vapor inlet pipes (N6, N7, N8) provided with baffle plates (P6, P7, P8), has the encased chamber divided into a tube-free region (B1), directly after the vapor inlets, and a tube-containing region (B2). U-Shaped guiding plates (L3, L4) cover at least 50% of the cross-sectional area between the two regions. Cooling water is supplied in cross-countercurrent to the vapor. A vapor condenser, in the form of a tube bundle heat exchanger with casing-side condensation, having at least two vapor inlet pipes (N6, N7, N8) provided with baffle plates (P6, P7, P8), has the encased chamber divided into a tube-free region (B1), directly after the vapor inlets, and a tube-containing region (B2). U-Shaped guiding plates (L3, L4) cover at least 50% of the cross-sectional area between the tube-free and tube-containing regions, such that the vapor flows only through the free area into the tube-containing region. Cooling water is supplied in cross-countercurrent to the vapor.
