<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backup method compatible with various backup forms desired by a user when the remaining capacity of a recording device is insufficient, and to provide a content recording device. <P>SOLUTION: When the remaining capacity of a content storage part 41 in the recording device 5 to record new contents distributed from a center 3 is insufficient, the center 3 presents the recording device 5 with a plurality of service configurations for keeping the content in place of the recording device, and backs up and saves the contents in accordance with the service configuration selected by the user.
