PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record an image preferable in color reproduction and tone reproduction by suitably applying a smoothing processing to color gamut of image data. SOLUTION: No smoothing treatment is performed to a remarked pixel, when its average luminosity is lower than a blackening luminosity L<SB>BK</SB>* (S1103). Thus, the signal value of the targeted pixel is reserved, and the pixel having originally the signal value of the luminosity over the blackening luminosity L<SB>BK</SB>* can be prevented from converting into a black point due to gamut compression. Accordingly, the pixel is blackened out, when the average luminosity of the remarked pixel is lower than the blackening luminosity; but the pixel with the signal value over the blackening luminosity will not be compressed to a black point, and observed macroscopically, gradation will not be impaired.
