PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method of a hollow fiber membrane module operable in filtration for a long period stably and continuously. SOLUTION: In the physical cleaning process of the external pressure type hollow fiber membrane module fed with raw liquid from the outside of the hollow fiber membrane and discharging filtrate from the inside, liquid containing free chlorine is fed to the raw liquid side to perform bubbling cleaning. In this case, the concentration of the free chlorine in the liquid fed to the raw liquid is controlled to make the concentration of the free chlorine in the liquid in the raw liquid side after bubbling 0.1 mg/L or more.
